PSOE and Junts reach agreement on amnesty law

Written by on 9 November 2023

Thousands of people have taken to the streets in Madrid in another night of protest following the announcement that PSOE and Junts confirmed that they had reached an agreement on the proposed amnesty law for those involved in the 2017 failed Catalan secession bid.

Protesters gathered outside of the PSOE headquarters for a 7th night, with riot police being pelted by flares and other objects. The planned law will cover the period from 2012 to 2023 and include cases of ‘lawfare’ or ‘judicialization of politics’.

The agreement secures Junts’ support for Pedro Sánchez to form a government in the forthcoming investiture vote. Speaking after the announcement, PSOE confirmed that they intend to schedule the investiture debate on the 15th and 16th November.

However, negotiations with the PNV ongoing, with their support needed for the investiture to proceed. Failure to do so could see Spain return to the ballot box in another General Election next year.
