Death Toll from Ceuta Migration Crisis Rises to 67

The death toll from the recent mass migrant crossings into Ceuta has risen to 67, according to the latest figures released by the Ministry of the Interior, making it one of the deadliest migration incidents ever recorded on Spain’s southern border.

Search and recovery operations have continued along the coastline, with emergency services recovering additional bodies from the sea over the past twenty-four hours.

Spanish authorities estimate that around 50,000 people crossed into Ceuta from Morocco during the unprecedented influx.

The government says more than 48,000 have since returned to Morocco, either voluntarily or through coordinated returns carried out in cooperation with the Moroccan authorities.

Border crossings have now largely ceased, while security remains heightened across the autonomous city.

The government has reinforced security with additional Army, Guardia Civil and Policía Nacional personnel, while new floating barriers have been installed at the Tarajal breakwater to help prevent further sea crossings.

The European Commission has also offered Spain additional support through Frontex as Madrid continues to call for a coordinated European response to the crisis.
