New pipeline will only carry green hydrogen

The Government has announced that the new gas pipeline that will link Spain with Portuagal and France will only transport green hydrogen, and not natural gas.

Officials said that whilst originally planned to move both, it will now only move environmentally sound hydrogen in order to gain additional EU funding.

It’s expected that Brussels will fund up to half of the build cost, with the other three nations then sharing the remaining expenditure.

Originally planned back in 2003 and then shelved due to lack of demand, Pedro Sanchez, along with Portuguese prime minister António Costa and French President Emmanuel Macron formally announced the agreement ahead of Octobers EU summit.

The three leaders will come together again tomorrow to formally start the project at a meeting in Alicante.
