Junts Demands Former Spanish PM Rajoy’s Testimony on ‘Operation Catalonia’

The political landscape in Spain is in turmoil following recent demands by Junts per Catalunya for the former Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy to appear before Congress.

This request comes after investigative reports by La Vanguardia and Eldiario.es surfaced allegations that Rajoy’s government may have illegally used police forces to investigate separatist parties as part of the controversial ‘Operation Catalonia’.

The investigations indicate that top police officials were allegedly employed to conduct off-the-books probes and orchestrate campaigns against the Catalan independence movement.

Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (ERC) joins in the call for answers, requesting testimonies from those with ‘the highest responsibility’ in the affair, including the testimony of the current Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska.

Government officials including President Pedro Sánchez have condemned the actions of the supposed ‘patriotic police’ under the Popular Party (PP), urging for a thorough investigation.

The case is further complicated by the alleged involvement of police commissioner José Manuel Villarejo and the previous dissemination of falsified documents that aimed to damage the reputations of leading pro-independence figures.

New documents and audios imply former President Rajoy was aware of and possibly endorsed these covert operations against Catalan politicians and businessmen.
