European Court dismisses Catalan separatist MEP appeal

The General Advocate of the Court of Justice of the European Union has confirmed that the European Parliament acted correctly in declaring vacant the seat won by former Catalan vice president, Oriol Junqueras in the May 2019 European Elections.

His seat was declared vacant by the Central Electoral Board after he was imprisoned due to his actions in the contested referendum and declaration on independence for the Catalan region.

Mr. Junqueras filed an appeal after it’s initial ruling, which was dismissed last week in a hearing at Strasbourg.
