Pedro Sánchez and Yolanda Díaz reach agreement to form coalition government

Written by on 24 October 2023

Pedro Sánchez and Yolanda Díaz have announced an agreement to form a coalition government after weeks of negotiations.

Following the announcement PSOE has called for a general meeting to consult party members on the agreement and the ratification of candidates for regional presidencies.

Other parliamentary groups, including Catalan independence parties ERC and Junts, need to vote in favour of the planned coalition government in the forthcoming investiture vote.

The pair said that they would sign a legislative agreement that included measures on reducing working hours and strengthening healthcare.

However, the agreement does not mention an amnesty for those involved in the 2017 Catalonia independence crisis or a regional referendum on self-determination – all currently pre-requisites of separatist parties to gain their support for a PSOE led government.
