Migrant Arrivals to Canary Islands Surge Over 1,000% in January

Spain’s Canary Islands, a renowned tourist destination, witnessed a significant increase in migrant arrivals from West Africa this January, with a more than 1,000% surge compared to the previous year, according to the country’s interior ministry.

The numbers have skyrocketed, with 7,270 people arriving at the archipelago situated in the Atlantic Ocean, up from 566 in the same period last year.

This marks a nearly 13-fold increase, setting a new precedent for migrant arrivals.

The ministry’s data highlights the growing challenge posed by the Atlantic migration route, known as the deadliest to Spain, where a reported 6,007 people lost their lives last year during the perilous sea voyage.

The escalating situation sheds light on the urgent need for solutions to manage and support the increasing number of migrants arriving in Spain, including through the Canary Islands, which saw an all-time record of 39,910 arrivals last year.

The small island of El Hierro, with a population of around 9,000, notably received more migrants than residents in 2023, underscoring the scale of the migration influx.
