Huge haul of cocaine discovered on boat in Canaries

Policia Nacional & Guardia Civil have arrested five people in connection to one of the largest seizures of cocaine in recent years.

Officers boarded a fishing boat in waters off of the Canary Islands where they discovered the cargo hidden inside a fuel tank, valued at €72 million.

Suspicions were raised after the boat – called AKT 1 – tried to pass itself off as another vessel.

The boat returned to port in Gran Canaria, with the five detainees – four of Turkish nationality and a Georgian citizen – being remanded in custody in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
