Firefighting continues as regional President confirms fire started deliberately

Written by on 20 August 2023

Wildfires on the island of Tenerife are continuing to burn uncontrolled in the north-eastern part of the island.

So far, around seven and a half thousand people have been evacuated from their homes or told to stay indoors.

Over two hundred and fifty firefighters, along with seventeen aircraft, are working around the clock to tackle the fire which is burning north of Mount Teide, with a perimeter of thirty-three kilometres.

Efforts to contain the fire are being hampered by its location in a mountainous national park.

Despite the fires, no Flights to and from Tenerife have been cancelled, and the regional government says the island is open for visitors.

Regional president Fernando Clavijo called the fire the most complex on the island for over forty years.
