At least 13 Moroccans die trying to cross to Canary Islands

Morroccan authorities have confirmed that the bodies of at least 13 Moroccans were pulled from the Atlantic Ocean after the boat they were in sank whilst trying to cross to the Canary Islands.

Twenty-four people, including a minor, were rescued from the water and the body of one woman was among those recovered. Eight remain unaccounted for.

It’s understood those on board the inflatable boat were trying to reach Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, when it struck rocks and sank near to the town of Mirleft.

Officials said those on board had paid over €1,000 for the crossing.

Last month the Interior Ministry said so far 27,789 migrants had reached Spanish territory via unofficial routes in 2022, including 15,742 arrivals in the Canary Islands.
