Spain Sets New Tourism Record

Spain has set a new record for international tourism, with approximately 85.1 million visitors in 2023, surpassing the pre-pandemic levels of 83.5 million in 2019, as reported by the National Statistics Institute.

The growth marks a 19% increase from the previous year, cementing Spain’s position among the world’s top destinations for travellers.

The UK, France, and Germany led the influx of tourists, supporting Spain’s significant role in the global tourism industry.

The revenue from international tourism also saw a notable jump, reaching about £108.7 billion in 2023, a 25% increase from the previous year. This surge in tourism has further solidified its importance to Spain’s economy, contributing to 12% of the country’s GDP.

Popular destinations within Spain included the north-eastern region of Catalonia, home to Barcelona, the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean, and the Canary Islands off North Africa. Spain’s thriving tourism sector not only highlights its enduring appeal but also underscores the ongoing recovery of the global tourism industry post-COVID-19 pandemic.
