Spain prepares to welcome the solar eclipse

Spain is preparing for a historic total solar eclipse, with the event expected to attract hundreds of thousands of people to viewing locations across the country.

It will be the first total solar eclipse visible from the Iberian Peninsula since 1912, with the path of totality crossing thirteen autonomous communities, from Galicia and Asturias through to the Balearic Islands.

The government has activated a special national emergency and traffic operation, with the DGT expecting between 400,000 and 1.5 million additional journeys towards viewing areas.

Authorities are urging people to plan their journeys carefully and to expect congestion.
