Spain Defends Democratic Solution Amid Arrests in Venezuela
Written by on 15 September 2024
Diplomatic tensions have risen sharply between Spain and Venezuela after the Venezuelan ambassador was recalled and two Spanish nationals were detained over the weekend.
In a statement issued by the Spanish government, they called for a peaceful resolution to the situation in Venezuela.
Venezuela’s Interior Minister – Diosdado Cabello – alleges the pair detained are involved in a plot to assassinate President Nicolás Maduro, a claim strongly denied by the Spanish Government.
According to Spain’s Foreign Ministry, the claims of the detainees being connected to Spain’s National Intelligence Centre have been categorically denied.
Tensions have risen between the countries following opaque presidential elections in July.
