PP Faces Possible Loss of Absolute Majority in Galicia

With the Galician electoral campaign underway, a pre-campaign survey released by the CIS indicates a shift in the political landscape of Galicia, Spain.

The survey, conducted between January 29 and February 1 with 3,743 respondents from the region, reveals that the People’s Party (PP) might see a decline in its stronghold, potentially losing its absolute majority in the Parliament.

Currently holding 42 seats, the PP’s new projection stands at 34-38 seats, just on the cusp of the absolute majority mark of 38. The survey suggests that while the PP remains the most voted party with a projected 42.2% of the votes, it witnesses a noticeable decline from its current positions.

Meanwhile, the Galician Nationalist Bloc (BNG), led by Ana Pontón, is set to strengthen its current second position in the parliament with a forecasted 22-26 seats, an improvement from their existing 19 seats.

This rise for the BNG appears to come at the expense of other left-leaning parties such as the Socialists’ Party of Galicia (PSdeG), which is expected to secure 13-15 seats, and Sumar, possibly entering the parliament with one seat.

Encouraging for the regionalist and nationalist sentiments, the survey highlights a potential entry for Democracia Ourensana with a seat from the Ourense province, while Vox and Podemos Galicia might not obtain any seats.

The poll also reflects that 70.2% of voters have already decided on their vote, with 27.7% still undecided. The electoral outcome could significantly influence the political direction in Galicia, presenting a key moment for the region’s political future as the campaign progresses.
