🔴 LIVE – Homes evacuated and airports closed after bushfires break out as amber alert for storms issued for Canaries

Authorities in the Canary Islands have issued ongoing alerts for the calima that has brought disruption and damage to the archipelago.
Strong winds from the Sahara brought dust and hot air to the islands, resulting in the closure of the islands airspace on Sunday, as well as forest fires breaking out in Gran Canaria and Tenerife.

Emergency services, as well as the military, have been working in extreme heat and gale force winds to tackle fires that broke out over the weekend. Homes were evacuated as a result, with a number sustaining fire damage.

A number of airports reopened last night, with Gran Canaria opening at around 8pm. Tenerife South and North continued to have some restrictions in place.
Weather warnings as a result of the calima remain until the middle of the afternoon according to Aemet.
People with respiratory problems, the elderly or the infirm are being advised to avoid strenuous exercise.
