Government confirms it will now send arms to Ukraine

The Spanish Government has confirmed that it has changed it’s plans regarding the sending of lethal weapons to Ukraine.

In a speech at the Congress of Deputies yesterday, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced that the country would now supply “offensive military hardware” to forces fighting the Russian invasion in Ukraine.

The deputies applaud Dmytro Matiuschenko, Charge d’Affaires of the Embassy of Ukraine in Madrid, during the appearance of the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, before the plenary session of Congress to report on the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the position of the EU and Spain .

Coalition partners Podemos however have criticised the move, Minister of Social Rights, Ione Belarra said the sending of weaponry was not effective and could be seen as an escalation of war.

However Podemos’ deputy prime minister voiced her support for the action, saying millions of lives were at stake.

Other political parties in the Congress, including PP, Vox, Ciudadanos and PNV voiced their support.

1,370 anti tank grenade launchers and 700,000 machine guns are set to be delivered to the eastern European country on Friday.
