Former Andalusian regional leaders imprisoned in corruption trial

Nineteen of twenty-one former senior officials of the Junta de Andalucia have been found guilty in a court in Seville for their involvement in a major corruption and embezzlement trial.
Two former regional PSOE premiers are included in the “ERE case”, involving a decade of irregularities in the use of a €680-million government fund meant for laid-off workers
José Antonio Griñán, who served as the PSOE’s regional premier in Andalusia between 2009 and 2013, has been handed a six years behind bars, while his predecessor, Manuel Chaves, also of the PSOE and who was in power between 1990 and 2009, has been barred from public office for nine years.
The trial took over a year, and consisted of 152 individual court hearings.
