Conservative association of judges rejects amnesty law: ‘It’s the beginning of the end of our democracy’

Written by on 2 November 2023

The Conservative association of judges – APM – has said they strongly opposes an amnesty law for those involved in the disputed 2017 Catalan declaration of independence, arguing that it would violate the Constitution and weaken the rule of law.

In a statement issued by the association, they believe the proposed law censures judges, questions the separation of powers, and exempts individuals from criminal responsibility without proper legal processes.

They went on to say that the law could set a dangerous precedent and undermine the judiciary’s role in safeguarding against abuses of power.

An amnesty agreement was made to secure enough votes to secure the return of PSOE to government in the forthcoming investiture vote.
