Over six thousand five hundred individuals vanished last year while attempting to reach Spain, with Senegal being the starting point for nearly half of those who are believed to have perished.
Migrant rights group Walking Borders reported 2023 as the deadliest year on record for migrants crossing to the Canary Islands, sparking concerns over the adequacy of rescue resources.
Nearly 400 children are among the number of people reported as missing presumed dead due to attempting to cross to the archipelago.
Last year saw nearly 57,000 irregular migrant arrivals in Spain according to data released by the Ministry of the Interior – that’s nearly double the number from the year before.
