Death toll passes that of China, as spain becomes second highest in terms of death rate

The coronavirus death toll jumped by 738 overnight on Tuesday to exceed that of China, where the disease originated. It was the highest overnight increase since the outbreak of the virus, and comes as the health minister Salvador Illa warned the peak was approaching.
With 3,445 fatalities, Spain now has the second highest number of deaths globally after Italy’s 6,820. According to yesterday’s data, there were 47,600 cases nationwide.

The grim landmark was passed as authorities began to carry out mass testing for public workers in a requisitioned fairground in Madrid, one of the worst-hit regions.
