A forest fire that has destroyed thousands of hectares of woodland in Gran Canaria appears to be weakening, according to the latest information from local authorities.

In a statement from the Canarian Government, the force of the fires, as well as its speed appears to be decreasing.

350 front line staff, and 18 aircraft were involved in the operation to extinguish the fire yesterday. The blaze has covered an area of 12,000 hectares with a perimeter of 80km.

Despite the fire, there is no reported impact to air transport connections, or to tourist areas.

The local Government has activated emergency plans with the Ministry of the Interior and the Spanish Red Cross to provide shelter for those who have been evacuated.

The cause of the fire remains unknown, however investigations are ongoing.
