At least eight people are known to have drowned after a boat that was carrying 35 migrants from Africa to the Canary Islands capsized – the regional emergency services have said.
Rescuers originally believed that four people had perished when the boat sank in the waters near to Orzola in Lanzarote, however another four bodies have since been recovered and emergency services believe there may be more victims yet to be discovered.
One of the 28 rescued from the vessel had to be taken to hospital for treatment. The deaths are the latest in nearly 500 that have been recorded since the start of the year, as illegal immigration to the archipelago continues to rise.
