The president of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, has said that he will do all he can to secure the location of the TMT 30 metre telescope in La Palma if it is not possible to install the device in Hawaii.
The original site for the telescope has faced objections due to it being built on a sacred volcano in Hawaii. La Palma has been selected as the alternative location.
At ten times the size of the Hubble Telescope, it would be one of the worlds most advanced ground based telescopes.
