Two thirds of people who are hospitalized fail to get adequate care, according to the latest data from the National Congress of the Spanish Society of Internal Medicine.
The society said that over treatment and excessive diagnosis of conditions led to people being treated for conditions that are not life threatening, with the treatment potentially causing more harm than good.
Doctors who submitted data also said that technology in hospitals was out of date, and the system for treating elderly patients was in need of modernisation.
