Concerns over the number of children being poisoned accidentally by alcohol hand washes have been raised, after the number of accidental poisonings rose 900% on last year.
In a report by the National Institute of Toxicology and Forensic Sciences, they said that 874 cases of accidental poisoning had been reported this year compared to only 90 in 2019. 585 of those cases were connected to a child ingesting alcohol gel.
368 cases involved children under the age of two. Whilst most cases were mild, the Minister of Justice – Juan Carlos Campo – has reminded parents to be careful when using gels near to children.
