13,159 new cases of the coronavirus were reported yesterday, bringing the total number of infections since the start of the pandemic to over 1.5 million.
Meanwhile the highest number of deaths per day in the second wave were reported, after 435 people who previously tested positive for covid-19 lost their lives.
The previous highest number of deaths in the second wave was reported just over a week ago.
Whilst the incidence rate of the virus is continuing to fall, the number of those undergoing treatment for – and dying from – covid-19 continues to rise.
Concerns are still being raised about intensive care capacity, with 2 regions now reporting over 60% occupancy in ICU beds, with covid patients occupying nearly half of all beds in 7 regions.
