Intensive care capacity concerns rise as coronavirus cases double in a week

Written by on January 11, 2021

Concerns over intensive care capacity are growing again after the number of coronavirus cases doubled since last week.

Yesterday the Ministry of Health announced a further 61,422 cases of the coronavirus in data that included tests carried out over the weekend.

Director of the Coordination Centre for Health Alerts and Emergencies, Fernando Simón, warned that conditions are expected to deteriorate in the coming weeks after the festive period.

He also said around 70 cases of the UK variant of the virus have been found in Spain so far, but denied that is what is driving the rise in infections.

The news came as more than a quarter of all intensive care beds in Spain are now being used to treat covid-19 patients.
